Beer Review: Super Invader by Great Notion

Beer: Super Invader by Great Notion

Style: Hazy DIPA

ABV: 9.0% @ N/A IBU’s

Great Notion made it to the granite state! If you do not know who Great Notion is, they are a powerhouse of a brewery coming out of Washington state. When I think of them, I think of their sours because I haven’t had a bad sour from them yet. But this time I am having a DIPA to see how those stack up. According to the brewery, this DIPA is inspired by a couple of their other IPA’s, Juice Invader and Super Ripe. I have yet to have those, but from the name themselves, I can see the inspiration. I will explain why below. But, Great Notion always kills the can art. If you buy beer based on can art, it’ll be hard to pass one of these up. I love the cartoon style and use of color to make the label pop. Now let’s get down to the beer itself.

This beer smells like hop candy after pouring it into a glass. I knew right away this beer was going to be good. Right off the bat, you get a wicked nice dank hop profile with notes of fresh ripe fruit, possibly pineapple or melon but I can never exactly say which fruit it is. I said before I can see the inspiration from those two beers because this beer tastes like the combo of those two. I could be wrong on this, but I can see Super Ripe tasting very citrusy and melon-like, while Juice Invader is juicy and hoppy. I will have to try those other two beers to confirm this suspicion so hopefully they will come into the state at some point. This beer has a dank profile but it’s not overly hoppy or bitter. It’s a very nice smooth drinking DIPA, it just has a lot of flavor along with it. This one is also 9% ABV but if you didn’t look at that, you probably wouldn’t know. That’s how smooth and delicious this beer is. From start to finish, this beer is easily a 4.5/5 and is a must try. I am very happy to have these guys in the state since who knows when I will get out west to Washington.
