Beer Review: Pura Piña

Beer: Pura Piña

Style: Soda inspired sour ale with pineapple

ABV: 6.0% @ N/A IBU’s

Pura Piña is a soda inspired sour brewed by Tripping Animals in Doral, Florida. I’ve had a good amount of Tripping Animals in the past, mainly because they are at a lot of beerfests, and I’ve only been to a few beerfests (that’s a lie). But, they usually don’t disappoint. I feel like they are known for their smoothie style sours because they typically pour those at those beerfests. But, whenever I see a sour from them I have to try it. This one intrigued me because it’s a soda inspired sour. Very recently, I had my first soda inspired sour from Branch & Blade, and it was BOMB. Since this one by Tripping Animals is a pineapple one, I had to get it because pineapple is simply the best fruit there is.

I poured this one right after the first official snowstorm of the season. I was honestly expecting the color to be lighter, more like pineapple yellow, but it could fool you for an IPA…until you take that first sip. If you’re a fan of pineapple you will like this one. It’s pretty much like drinking pineapple juice with a little bit of fiz to it, so it really is a pineapple soda. Like the other soda sour I had, you can chug this beer if you really wanted making it pretty dangerous. It is that smooth and delicious. Good thing it’s only 6% alcohol. It also has some sweetness to it but it’s basically the same as you would get from eating pineapple, maybe a little less. As far as aroma goes, you’ll get some nice fresh fruit on the nose every sip you take. This beer is not a smoothie sour, nor a tart sour, but if you want something refreshing, juicy and different, I suggest you give this one a shot. As a pineapple lover, I will have to give this beer a 4.25 out of 5, based upon Untapped rating scale.
